The Flash has downloaded 08:05 < dasunt> Okay, I'm currently engaged in much fuckwittery, this time of my own making. 08:06 <@Dolemite> Wheee! 08:07 < dasunt> Problem: Got 3 servers, Debian 12 + Proxmox. Going to be three network devices - wifi (connects to the home wifi network), 1G network (for proxmox/ceph), and 1G private network (for virtual machines). Need to do a HA router from the wifi to the private network. 08:07 < dasunt> i'm wondering if wifi supports VRRP. 08:07 < dasunt> Can't find much info, because obviously this is not a great idea. 08:09 <@Dolemite> ^^^^ 08:09 < dasunt> Yuppers. 08:09 <@Dagmar> Well, _yes_ 08:09 < dasunt> Very much yes. 08:10 < dasunt> Weirdly, a home built in 1928 isn't really setup to run a small homelab in a basement corner. Severe lack of ethernet runs. 08:10 < dasunt> I'd complain, but I think the architect and builders are all dead. 08:11 <@Dolemite> Well get your crimpers and box o' cable and fix that 08:13 < dasunt> I've thought about it, but haven't figured out a great way to do cable runs. 08:17 <@Dagmar> Are you trying to go _through_ the house or just inside the "home lab" 08:18 <@Dagmar> 'cuz through one wall is easy. Down a wall, or through a floor/ceiling is where everyone says "Fuck it. Call an electrician" and I would tend to agree, because of the type of tools that'll usually be needed 08:19 <@Dolemite> Depends on whether you can get under the floor. It's pretty easy to find your walls from underneath. 08:19 <@Dagmar> Also, there are pills that will help with the desire to do "HA" anything over wireless. 08:19 <@Dagmar> They may cause some slight drooling and memoryloss. 08:19 <@Dolemite> Also available in liquid/bottle form 08:20 <@Dagmar> It's a right bitch to punch through studs without a flexible drill, and it will still involve making a largish hole in the wall. Way easier to jsut pay someone who has the right tools for that 08:25 <@Dolemite> If you're not able to get underneath, you can still pull off the baseboard, run down to the base of the drywall and cut just enough from the bottom to get to the studs, where you can drill holes that way. It's still a PITA to do, but you don't have to redo any drywall afterwards. 08:34 < dasunt> I'd have to go up a plaster wall somewhere. 08:34 < dasunt> It's an awkward layout. 08:38 <@Dolemite> Burn it to the ground and start over 08:39 < dasunt> Have you seen construction costs lately? 08:40 <@Dolemite> Well with all of the climate change, tornadoes are making their way up to your area more often. Maybe insurance will take care of it. 08:41 < dasunt> Perhaps. 08:41 <@Dolemite> So when you're hunkering down from the storm in your basement, go ahead and run some cable for the rebuild ;) 08:42 < dasunt> Heh. 08:42 < dasunt> I also need to run a radon vent one of these days. 08:42 <@Dolemite> When we moved up here I refused to consider slab on grade houses 08:43 < dasunt> House is at the "not required to be mitigated", but at the lower end of "maybe you should think about mitigation" level. 08:44 <@Dolemite> No radon issues here, but limestone and a tendency to get all of our rain in shorter bursts, so leakage through the walls. We spent the money to get crawlspace encapsulation done for the entire downstairs. 09:34 < dasunt> Oh, that reminds me - so our ground freezes really well up here. One spring, I discovered that the area right under the dryer exhaust vent melts first. Let me just say there was an example of hydrostatic pressure at that point - water was literally shooting out of a crack in the wall in the basement. 09:34 < dasunt> That summer, buried a 2x4 sheet of ridged cell foamboard right under the mulch by the vent, to keep the ground frozen. 09:38 < dasunt> Seems to have worked, but I do feel like it is an inelegant solution. 10:37 <@Dolemite> Helly yeah. Finally figured out that damn Perl stuff I was trying to do last week. 13:18 < Evilpig> Dagmar: yes that is a wes anderson film 100% 13:18 < Evilpig> now watch his other movies 15:29 <@eryc> guys your new office chairs have arrived https://i.imgur.com/i4tDP5E.png 15:29 < PigBot> None (at i.imgur.com) https://tinyurl.com/2ml7esom 15:43 < Evilpig> good lord 18:09 <@Mirage> 101 outside and one of my neighbors is out mowing their lawn?! 18:37 < Evilpig> it's gotta get done sometime --- Log closed Tue Jul 18 00:00:01 2023
