16:18 < Evilpig> I have finally solved the issue of my palo alto rpm upgrade problem
16:19 < Evilpig> Original problem running globalprotect-5.x.x.x from paloalto.  they put out a GlobalProtect-6.x.x.x and it won't install because it sees a file conflict with everything from v5.  the answer is add obsoletes to the rpm.spec. 
16:20 < Evilpig> I put in the ticket with them and expect a quick resolution and three months later i'm still fighting them, the last update from their "engineer" is that they put obsolets in the spec and after they did because of the order of operations for installing it erases everything from the v5 after it installs 6
16:21 < Evilpig> now rpm is fairly smart in that if it knows about files and it knows that it is obsoleting a previous version and they have matching files it excludes those from the clean up.  I asked them to publish the spec and they've refused.
16:22 < Evilpig> so I did the low tech method of making my own spec with the help of a nice project and since paloalto already published a self-install version of all the crap I just untarred that and used my spec file to add in the obsoletes stuff to see for myself
16:22 < Evilpig> it immediately installed and I was like "wtf is wrong with you turds?  it didn't error and it's fine"  then I notice it's installed but there aren't any files. wtf?
16:23 < Evilpig> the answer is in the pre/post scripts.  paloalto put their OWN uninstaller in the spec so that when the erase is called it does an rm -rf on the files in the paloalto directory but leaves the directory itself alone.  conveniently it also logs this action to their own install.log
16:24 < Evilpig> so their own incompetence with using rpmbuild lead them to write a script to clean up like they were doing something by hand and THAT is the root cause of this fuckup.
16:25 < Evilpig> tomorrow i'm going to deconstruct the v5 rpm and remove the scripts, reinstall it without them, then test my v6 rpm and after all that works, then i'm gonna give this engineer one last chance to work with me before I put the entire solution, root cause, etc into that support ticket and start shaking the tree until a manager falls out and down on top of this jr engineer
