Do I have to wait until my hair is white before going full grump? 10:38 < Evilpig> nope, but it helps 10:38 <@Dagmar> Nope. Today's crop of annoying youngsters are practially self-optimizing for verbal abuse 10:39 <@Dagmar> More than ever before they gravitate to dumb shit worthy of contempt and derision 10:39 < dasunt> I want to abuse people my own age though. 10:39 <@Dagmar> THat sounds more like misanthropy 10:40 <@Dagmar> n4dir: Display managers "get it" because someone thought to add a session file for them to see for each DE 10:41 < dasunt> I don't understand how people go through their entire IT careers and never learn that garbage in means garbage out. 10:41 <@Dagmar> LAck of beatings, er I mean lack of being held responsible for their own silly mistakes 10:42 <@Dagmar> I mean we've got a completely bullshit haiku people are bandying about to excuse their own ignorance as if this were a perfectly reasonable thing to do 10:42 < dasunt> Or perhaps I don't want to admit that there's a successful IT career that can be built on never verifying anything because the systems to verify are horribly broken. 10:42 <@Dagmar> You mean the MSCE track? 10:43 < dasunt> Nope. This is the magic of the cloud. 10:43 <@Dagmar> THe money thing will winnow them down eventually 10:43 < Evilpig> those people are the garbage 10:43 < dasunt> But the salesperson said it was a miracle cure for budgets! 10:44 <@Dagmar> it's a "failover" system, which means it "fails over here" and "fails over there" and "fails over and over" 10:44 < dasunt> Lift & shift baby, can never go tits up. 10:44 < Evilpig> failing doesn't mean failed anymore thanks to poettering 10:44 < oddball> I was deeply depressed when I learned the hard way that there are people that are making lots of money by being in charge of expensive equipment for large companies that can't trouble shoot their way out of a wet paper bag. 10:45 < Evilpig> my system-duh service doesn't fail, it "auto-heals" 10:45 < Evilpig> I don't care that it segfaulted, it healed 10:45 < dasunt> oddball: The trick is to be in charge of tracking your own success. 10:45 <@Dagmar> I better never hear any sales engineer use that term for that 10:45 <@Dagmar> I will be on them to explain where I'm supposed to get all the goats blood 10:46 <@Dagmar> If it's not a Lovecraftian or Burroughs-inspired system, it doesn't heal because it's not organic. 10:47 < oddball> And, apparently, large companies are cool with losing thousands of dollars a minute for hours... because their employees refused to admit a mistake that some flunky making $20/hour diagnosed in 5 minutes over the phone. 10:48 < dasunt> I get the feeling that IT has gotten dumber over the years. 10:48 <@Dagmar> ...and in the meantime people who go into detail when troubleshooting get saddled with tech support chimpanzees 10:48 < dasunt> Why diagnose if something breaks, just spin it up again! 10:49 < dasunt> It's the dark side of Moore's Law: As computing power increases, the ability to hack your way around problems also increases. 10:50 < aestetix> https://wraltechwire.com/2023/04/24/red-hat-cutting-hundreds-of-jobs-ceo-says-in-letter-to-employees/ 10:50 < PigBot> Red Hat cutting hundreds of jobs, CEO says in letter to employees | WRAL TechWire (at wraltechwire.com) https://tinyurl.com/25g5ot5u 10:50 < oddball> Well, when your collections department can't make out going phone calls because you blocked your phone system from talking to your AD server... 10:51 < dasunt> Wall Street will likely reward them. 10:51 < dasunt> I don't know why - either you are admitting you hired a bunch of people who are net negative money sinks, or you are cutting people making you money. 11:27 < dasunt> Tucker Carlson apparently got fired from Fox. 11:27 <@Dolemite> yep, good riddance 11:27 <@Dolemite> but that's not really enough to change things - they have plenty of other talking heads that talk out of their ass 11:29 <@Dagmar> hahahh 11:29 <@Dagmar> I can't wait to see what the spin on that is 11:30 <@Dagmar> They can't seriously think he's going to keep his mouth shut and just be the fall guy for a seven hundred and eighty million dollar judgement, knowing how many other Fox execs were all in favor of what led to that 11:30 <@Dagmar> This should be hilarious 11:34 <@Dagmar> THey "mutually aggreed to part ways" LOL 11:35 <@Dagmar> John_Ivan: It doesn't, but your font renderer apparently does 11:56 < dasunt> Mutually part ways with no announcement beforehand, and no closing show. 11:56 < dasunt> Sounds very mutual. 12:17 < Evilpig> what lunatic are they going to get to spew their nonsense now? I'm sure there are plenty to choose from, just curious how long it will take for the new one to reach critical mass before the conspiracy theories run freely again 13:26 < Evilpig> wtf? https://www.bandsintown.com/e/104275452 13:26 < PigBot> Trinity Wiseman Nashville Tickets, Taco Bell Cantina Apr 30, 2023 | Bandsintown (at www.bandsintown.com) https://tinyurl.com/2dgpo2r7 13:26 < Evilpig> Dagmar / oddball: taco bell cantina? 13:29 < oddball> As one of my friends from out of town said when I noted that a McDonald's had live music "you weren't kidding, everywhere's got live music." 13:30 < Evilpig> I've heard of the taco bell cantinas before, them being the more upscale version of the place. I just hadn't heard we had one here 13:30 < Evilpig> looking at street view I see it isn't huge, just guessing they have a little stage and a counter? 13:46 <@Dagmar> No idea where that is 13:46 <@Dagmar> The closest thing I know of is the McDonalds over near Shopryland what has a radio station 13:47 < oddball> The McDonald's? It was downtown. 13:47 <@Dagmar> I'm not sure a bunch of clowns in the parking lot counts 13:48 < oddball> Heh... I actually came across it in a Tennessean article a few years back. 13:49 <@Dagmar> Oh wait that's new for 2nd Ave 13:50 <@Dagmar> It's across the street and maybe four doors up from the Wild Whores Saloon 13:50 <@Dagmar> Probably offering live music was the only way Taco Bell was going to be allowed into that location 13:57 <@Dagmar> Sweet jesus those hotel rooms cost a lot 14:05 <@Mirage> https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tucker-carlson-leaving-fox-news/ 14:05 < PigBot> Tucker Carlson is leaving Fox News, network announces - CBS News (at www.cbsnews.com) https://tinyurl.com/22csrlm2 14:06 <@Mirage> Breaks my heart... 14:29 < Evilpig> Mirage: dasunt broke that news at ~11 but you brought the link. nice 15:41 <@Mirage> I looked back to see if anyone had, but overlooked it I guess 15:52 < Evilpig> easy to do. still funny 15:53 < Evilpig> giving wireguard it's first real world test today. gotta say, i'm liking it 16:03 < oddball> interesting that both TUcker Carlson and Don Lemon got the axe on the same day. 16:09 <@Dagmar> Don Lemon actually just plain ol' left 16:09 < Evilpig> they were just talking about that in my former coworkers discord 16:09 <@Dagmar> There was no "mutual" to Lemon 16:10 < Evilpig> did he leave or was he cut? discord said fired and then speculated on the sexual preditor allegations around him 16:10 <@Dagmar> WEll, Fired anyway 16:11 <@Dagmar> But at least teh CNN announcements look like glowing praise, which is in stark contrast to the Fox news announcer looking like offscreen someone had a gun pointed at her 16:11 < Evilpig> at the same time he was "defending" fucker carlson. :-/ 16:11 < Evilpig> > yeah, that is where i am saying they finally had a reason. though, seems like those lawsuits go against freedom of the press. unless he got up there and said "i absolutely know they used these systems to rig the election" which to my knowledge he didn't.. i can't imagine anybody would be that stupid . he just interviewed people on his show that felt that way and pointed out all of the oddities that came along with that election and what happened over night. What's wrong with providing every possible angle and letting folks draw their own conclusions eh. 16:13 < Evilpig> alright. i'll be back later. headed over to this brewery to meet up with dolemite and tell stories in an analog setting 19:25 < oddball> https://www.indiatimes.com/news/india/cow-hit-by-vande-bharat-train-lands-on-man-peeing-on-track-kills-him-600120.html 19:25 < PigBot> Rajasthan: Cow Hit By Vande Bharat Train Lands On Man Peeing On Track, Kills Him (at www.indiatimes.com) https://tinyurl.com/2y23pt9d 19:37 < Evilpig> https://www.brooklynbowl.com/nashville/events/detail/shrek-rave-13071285 19:37 < PigBot> Shrek Rave | Brooklyn Bowl (at www.brooklynbowl.com) https://tinyurl.com/292jfwgl 19:37 < Evilpig> I don't know what this is, but i'm positive i'm too old for it 21:23 <@Mirage> blah. 2nd of my 3 NZXT water coolers has flaked out on me now. Only spare fan I have right now for AM4 is for the Ryzen 5 and isn't quite cutting it for the Ryzen 7. The chip will get down to the upper 40's to lower 50's when completely idle, but the second I do anything it hops up to ~60. W/ the water cooler it rarely went above 60 at higher load. 21:24 <@Mirage> Ordered a Noctua for it that should be in tomorrow. --- Log closed Tue Apr 25 00:00:27 2023
