Or is it like FSMO roles and just a bunch of wasted drive space.. 08:15 <@Dagmar> Some places still teach it 08:15 <@Dagmar> Others try to teach a different model because they like the idea of their students struggling to diagnose low-level networking issues 08:17 <@Dagmar> Like, invariably I have those people telling me they were told the tcp/ip model is more accurate to what is being done now, that it only has four layers, and that they don't know fuck all more than that 08:17 <@Dagmar> Apparently it's better because it doesn't require you to learn anything other htan it's better 08:36 <@jb7od> If I'd come up with *aaS, it'd have gotten flamed into the floor for 'violating osi'. 08:37 <@Dagmar> Well, you have to keep the people dumb enough so they can be manipulated by the sales engineers somehow 08:42 <@jb7od> What's to keep anybody from injecting once a process is client-side (assuming you're retaining whatever dependencies)? 08:42 <@Dagmar> injecting what 08:43 <@Dagmar> Evilpig: The battery that was in it was the one that came with the car so... it's had a good run 08:44 <@Dagmar> It was like 8 or 9 years old 09:19 <@Dagmar> Goddamnit 09:19 <@Dagmar> That cookie code I was working on magically decided it's going to work this morning 09:19 <@Dagmar> I guess I finally hit upon the right combination of components 09:20 <@Dagmar> I fell back to both using HTTP::Cookies (instead of HTTP::CookieJar::LWP) and explicitly calling $jar->extract_cookies($response) 09:20 <@Dagmar> Now I just have to pass the result through parse_json, re-fold the results a bit, and shove them into an HTML output function 09:21 <@Dagmar> ...oh and build an entire set of dhcp/dns/relay/client virtuals to test some shit so we can maybe get DNS at the office off of the AD servers 09:26 <@jb7od> How big's your new spot? Got a lot of ppl? 09:36 <@Dagmar> wot? 09:36 <@jb7od> Aren't you working at a new place? Just curious what your userbase is like- I know what it used to roughly 09:37 <@jb7od> s/to/to be/g 09:47 <@Dagmar> Nope 09:47 <@Dagmar> Same place I've been working for about three years now 09:47 <@jb7od> Hahaa- sorry if you're working for the military or something and it's edgy to ask. My most recent headcount was 53 (which was a little over the sweet spot; if Bill Carlile was still alive, I'd have hired him in 2018/19 and saved the future) 09:47 <@Dagmar> No, I'm working for a healthcare IT management company 09:47 <@jb7od> (if anybody dies, if you see him, tell him so) 09:50 <@Dagmar> Ours is more like 15k 09:51 <@Dagmar> ...but some of them can pass a phishing test now, so there's that 09:52 <@jb7od> >_< oh dang. Sorry. We nearly rolled those out, or something to that effect. It was decided against, but it became a little bit of a right of passage for new-hires- 09:53 <@Dagmar> huh? 09:53 <@jb7od> Getting phished lol 09:54 <@Dagmar> Ya'll need to stop fuckin' around and do regular phishing tests instead of letting new hires hand their access out to assholes 09:54 <@jb7od> (well, phishing test; getting phished) 09:54 <@jb7od> Oh, I'm freelance now. 09:54 <@Dagmar> The first one you do, even if it's horrible, you're going to be able to expect 10-15% of the staff to fail 09:55 <@Dagmar> People are still dumb as fuck about their email 09:56 <@jb7od> When I was still in there, whenever somebody went for their first login, I got a chance to educate- those went better than anyone who went rouge 09:57 <@jb7od> I got super good at headers though- especially squashing beef (which usually resulted in whatever complainer having to open a ticket on whoever other than us and their jank DNS) 09:57 <@jb7od> (you'd be shocked what some guys have for DNS) 09:57 <@Dagmar> No I wouldn't 09:58 <@Dagmar> Ours is "okay" and I'm gearing up to replace it enterprisewide 09:59 <@Dagmar> I wanna get DNS and DHCP off the Windows AD servers so the Windows guys can just worry about authentication 09:59 <@Dagmar> ...because I can totally throw together web interfaces to make checking in on that shit easy 09:59 <@jb7od> This one guy had all his legacy MX (which was 4 lines) put at the end of his one line of o365, and was trying to manage it all by setting "priority", but in the real world was randomly timing out. 10:01 <@jb7od> I felt like I had to train everybody I talked to along the way on that one though- dunno if they ever fixed it either. 10:04 -!- NotLarry [~NotLarry@066-190-177-036.res.spectrum.com] has joined #se2600 10:26 <@Mirage> Dagmar: Dell failed so miserably w/ the one last year that even hitting the 'report' button, which is what you're supposed to do, flagged you for the extended training bullshit 10:27 <@Mirage> The only way to pass it was to ignore it or just delete it 10:38 <@Dagmar> Well, that's what happens when you use Dell 10:47 <@Dagmar> Oh more spammers 11:03 <@Dagmar> I'm going to demand the address of these fuckers when these "EZ Quote" people call me back, and I'm sending them a fucking bill for my time 13:36 <@Dagmar> I have found the new Asian Herbert West in a movie called 'Homunculus' 14:09 -!- eryc^ is now known as ery 14:09 -!- ery is now known as eryc 15:03 <@jb7od> Dagmar: You guys figure out what to do about WINS? My vote is take it with (seen erratic name behavior trying to segregate, especially from printers/print servers- I think they're coded to use NetBIOS Shortnames). Pretty positive it's just a line to set to 'true' down in smb.conf, def worth it if you're taking that stack off of the DC. 15:06 <@jb7od> I know it's 'old' and not needed for much but in my experience, you don't get reliable shortnames. Win clients themselves do okay with it, but not much else. 15:13 <@Dagmar> We basically don't use WINS at all 19:17 < brimstone> so... err... phreaknic? 20:24 <@Dagmar> Prlly will be virtual this year 20:24 <@Dagmar> Securing a space at a reasonable price at this point in the year isn't likely to be happeniong --- Log closed Wed Mar 08 00:00:13 2023
