After spending entirely too much time trying to do diagnostics and such for their support who'd simply asked 'did you follow the instructions' before starting down the rabbit hole, I finally just looked up the manufacturer and checked their site

12:43 <@Mirage> The one main difference is that apparently too many people were having issue with installing it the originally intended way, so they redesigned the connector so that it installed flipped over for the new ones.  So, when I was installing it 'correctly' by the old instructions, I was actually plugging in the HDD cable backwards
