Make sure it's REALLY worth it before deciding to go there." phase. 07:48 <@Dolemite> So we went from "Cloud First" to "Cloud Smart" in terms of the strategy names 07:48 <@aestetix> Dolemite: exactly! 07:48 <@aestetix> I keep getting into fights with people asking why we aren't using a managed service for X 07:48 <@aestetix> and the answer is always "do the math" 07:49 <@Dolemite> Well if it's a service that needs a lot of administration and you don't have the staffing, it makes sense 07:49 <@aestetix> Yeah sure 07:49 <@aestetix> And you have the budget for it 07:49 <@Dolemite> But putting a 1-person team or even a 2-person team on a system that needs people on call all the time... fuck that 07:50 <@aestetix> I got into a fight with one team who was using an api based alerting/email system.... like a third party tool you call via rest in crontab 07:51 <@aestetix> I asked why they didn't just use a local sendmail or postfix relay 07:51 <@aestetix> they had never heard of it 07:51 <@aestetix> I really wonder how many of these saas tools exist because people didn't bother to rtfm about how linux works 07:51 <@Dolemite> Heh, wow 07:52 <@aestetix> well the other common answer is "it's too hard to set up" 07:52 <@Dolemite> People have gotten so used to their IP range being blacklisted they just use third party API calls, now 07:52 <@aestetix> Yeah sure. So just route the mail server to go through gmail or something 07:53 * aestetix sighs 07:53 <@Dolemite> Meh. I've got our local postfix relay setup using certificate based authentication and a web interface where you can authenticate and submit the cert for any system you're listed as a contact for. Less than a week's worth of work. 07:53 <@aestetix> ok there you go 07:53 <@Dolemite> So it's exposed to the internet and all these people trying to bruteforce SASL and idgaf because it doesn't use passwords, anywho. 07:54 <@aestetix> it's just sad watching so many companies, especially startups, throw all their money into managed services because "it's easier" and then a year later the company goes under because it can't afford its server bills 07:55 <@Dolemite> yeah, startups today don't know how to run lean. They burn through all that angel investor cash like sailors on leave. 08:52 <@Mirage> Got my new t-shirt over the weekend which fits this conversation nicely: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08YQ9H1B4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details 08:52 < PigBot> Amazon.com: There Is No Cloud It's Just Someone Else's Computer T-Shirt : Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry (at www.amazon.com) https://tinyurl.com/y3rupovz 09:23 <@Dolemite> So our Group Leader was talking about team accomplishments and made the statement last week in our big group meeting that one of the Tier 1's had written a script to do unattended upgrades on Ubuntu from 18.04 -> 20.04. I'm like, "So what?" I've got it all on two compound command lines. 09:24 <@Dolemite> I guess when they've dealt with unlicensed RedCrap Workstation for so long where you couldn't even upgrade major versions that they think it's a big accomplishment. 10:22 <@aestetix> I just trolled the shit out of robinhood 10:24 <@aestetix> robinhood just laid off 9% of their workforce 10:24 <@aestetix> and they have created a google spreadsheet with the people they are laying off, to help them get a new job 10:25 <@aestetix> and they left the spreadsheet editable 10:25 <@aestetix> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UKOyPDjtQI2daJipUTQXD6cBVeim_G9slQ9puR8OPo8/edit#gid=0 10:25 <@aestetix> see if you can find the little present I left 10:25 < PigBot> Robinhood Talent Open to Work! I don't know 13:32 < Evilpig> I just had to complete some new required training on preventing workplace violence 13:32 <@Dagmar> Hahahah 13:32 < Evilpig> Examples of workplace violence 13:32 < Evilpig> Yelling, using profanity, making unreasonable demands, being verbally abusive Oral or written threats, invading personal space, aggressive posture Physical assault (with or without weapons), throwing objects, destroying property Acts that cause stress or trauma An isolated incident, or a persistent conflict between two or more people 13:32 <@Dagmar> Ther'es whole departments guilty of that last one 13:32 < Evilpig> my comment... "well fuck me. I am violent to you all daily" 13:33 <@Dagmar> "making unreasonable demands" <-- "If you want to change our init script you have to maintain it" 13:33 < Evilpig> my favorite is the "aggressive posture" 13:33 < Evilpig> I am not violent if I give you an angry look 13:33 < Evilpig> someone needs to tell my face how to be quiet when people wave their dumb around 13:45 <@aestetix> example of an aggressive posture: coming to work with a porno mustache 15:54 <@Mirage> fucking hell.. been fighting with trying to virtualize plex again. got the nvidia card i wanted setup and configured for passthrough, but the nvidia module kept failing. After 2-3 hrs digging on the net I finally found where someone points out that you have to disable secure boot for the VM to use the nvidia kernel driver. 16:16 <@Mirage> and now that the driver works and cuda is installed on to the fun part: compiling ffmpeg 19:12 <@Mirage> Plex got real pissy at first when i migrated the library and such over. Had to log out of everything and reconnect w/ my credentials to be able to view the new server libraries and stuff. Really weird. 19:13 <@Mirage> So far the VM seems to be performing very well. Encoded a movie w/o any issues and cuda worked as expected, which is good. 21:34 <@Dagmar> No this isn't creepy at all: https://twitter.com/saalon/status/1521286882327515137 21:34 < PigBot> No Title (at twitter.com) https://tinyurl.com/yyqg55ct --- Log closed Wed May 04 00:00:58 2022
