He was flying on an AWACS and they were tracking Soviet MiGs by their radar signatures, but every 15-20 minutes the plane would "disappear" for several minutes, then pop back up on tracking.

14:34 <@Mirage> A few years later a crashed MiG was recovered by the US and they discovered that the radar system used tubes and so would have to be powered off every so often in order to let them cool, otherwise the system would get flakey and/or could catch fire.  So the 'high tech stealth' planes wound up being cobbled together shit that had to be shut down to keep it from eating itself.
