I can't even tell you how jarring this was. I mean, my favorite korean mmo? sure- shut that down and make me cry weeby tears, but that one was a gutpunch I still haven't recovered from-- like on the "hey! I used that!" 02:54 < jb7od> slapped with a trout on that one for sure. 06:19 <@Dolemite> mr0ning, be0tches and h0ez! 06:24 * aestetix hugs Dolemite 10:12 <@Mirage> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhkZQeTQ6oM 10:12 < PigBot> Ask Adam Savage: How Ridiculous Was Filming the MythBusters Herding Cats Episode? - YouTube (at www.youtube.com) https://tinyurl.com/yc2ben7f 16:52 <@Dagmar> ANother SMS spam. 16:52 <@Dagmar> ...with a URL. 16:52 <@Dagmar> I wonder how long it will take to do 100,000 hits if there's 100 copies of wget going at once. 16:52 <@Dagmar> LET'S FIND OUT 16:58 <@Evilpig> guessing they sent you a unique url to track hits so they can verify who clicked their links, I doubt you'd flood them out and just cause yourself more spam texts later instead 17:10 <@Dagmar> I don't have to stop at 100,000 hits 17:10 <@Dagmar> We're going to find out whether or not they're smarter than some people from Telstra 17:11 <@Dagmar> Some years ago, they rather saucily informed me that they didn't have the _time_ to monitor the actions of their shared hosting customers. 17:11 <@Dagmar> The next spam got them 100 hits. 17:11 <@Dagmar> THen 1,000 hits. 17:11 <@Dagmar> THen 10,000 hits. 17:12 <@Dagmar> A million hits with 1,000 copies of wget running in parallell nearly broke their shit 17:12 <@Dagmar> Suddenly, the spamming fuckwit had their service cancelled because "I'm in the US bitches!" 17:13 <@Dagmar> They're not going to get a referral header that's useful from an SMS message, but just in case, all these hits are coming from "http(s)://$randomstring.fuckyouspammers.$random/$random" using the "Fuck-your (spamming 1.$random) Bullshit" browser 17:14 <@Dagmar> I ain't _subtle_ 17:14 <@Dagmar> Nor am I trying to bring down their infrastructure, yet 17:14 <@Dagmar> I'm not going to waste my time trying to talk to the people operating 'gigamale.com' 17:15 <@Dagmar> I am, however, going to make sure the stick I beat them with is shaped like the referral code of the fuckwit who is spamming my phone. 17:16 <@Dagmar> Consideirng that I never got one of these before I allowed Lenscrafters to send me SMS about an appointment and the EULA of their subcontractor seemed a little iffy... I might just go sniffing around that hosting provider 17:18 < jb7od> I've never been able to satisfactorilly avenge myself in those kinds of altercations. It's never enough even in the rare case a foreign isp cooperates, it's just unfulfilling. 17:20 <@Dagmar> Yeah somewhere in that altercation with Telstra they actually suggested there was nothing I could do about it 17:20 <@Dagmar> I was like, "Clearly they don't know how crazy crazy really gets" 17:20 <@Dagmar> I'm not asking for much. Just don't spam _my_ number. 17:21 <@Dagmar> Once I've started down this road, if we talk, I'll tell them which number it is they should not spam. 17:22 <@Dagmar> These people are also doing online ordering. 17:22 <@Dagmar> You know what the best part about that is? 17:22 <@Dagmar> If an attempt at ordering fails, for any reason, it still costs them money. 17:23 <@Dagmar> ...and here I am with a file containing 10,000 completely bogus identities that can be coupled with bogus credit card numbers which pass a modulus-10 check. 17:23 <@Dagmar> I *can* skip ahead to costing them a few grand in fees, but I'd rather this remain relatively sporting. 17:24 <@Dagmar> THey're probably in the Ukraine or China and will just have to suck it up 17:27 < jb7od> Oh I hear you. Get this- we get some hosting for a mail server. The ip we inherit belonged to some spam team literally on every single possible spam service in the known universe. There was an infuriating amount of cleanup involved and the hardest to convince the IP was no longer in the posession of a bunch of botlords of all of these was _Microsoft_, who if I recall correctly, never did clear it, ultimately I migrated to a different datacenter over it to get 17:27 < jb7od> new IPs. 17:27 <@Dagmar> Oh damn. LOL 17:27 <@Dagmar> I'd have pushed back on the provider about being handed dirty IPs like that 17:28 <@Dagmar> "Cleaning these up is ya'lls cross to bear, not mine. I'll get service from somemone else." 17:28 < jb7od> Oh, I had the provider calling them too, I really did try... 17:28 < jb7od> The poor vendor had no idea 17:28 <@Dagmar> That's probably a matter of them being unwilling to spend the money on sufficiently skilled personnel. 17:28 <@Dagmar> ...or probably any personnel. 17:29 < jb7od> I don't blame em, but I do agree that more could have been done. 17:33 < jb7od> They did have my back on it, I'd have been pretty pissed otherwise, but they stepped up. We both ended up in these bizarre circular dialoges with MS India about it, which was almost dystiopian --- Log closed Sat Mar 06 00:00:07 2021
