I remember gnome2 being the best one for forever (i guess in the beginning all I did was slackware, too, that contributed to gnome2 [and fork] usage). I figured I'd just wait it out, most everything I have serverwise is repeat-upgraded headless or hosted type stuff, so I ended up with some desktop tinker-time and totally blew away a whole installation in recoil from checking out gdm3 lol
