The shock was like --purge. 14:18 <@_NSAKEY> Yeah, they really screwed everything up after GNOME 2. 14:18 <@_NSAKEY> It was like the KDE 3.5 to KDE 4 jump, except worse. 14:19 <@_NSAKEY> Which was made even funnier when you realize that to the GNOME crowd, KDE 4 was a meme... And then they proceeded to put out the abortion that is GNOME 3. 14:20 <@jb7od> it reminds me of the cheap androids and chrome- confusingly phone-like. 14:21 -!- K`Tetch_ [~no@unaffiliated/ktetch] has joined #se2600 14:23 -!- K`Tetch [~no@unaffiliated/ktetch] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 15:16 <@_NSAKEY> It was so awful that Debian dropped GNOME in favor of Xfce for their default install. 15:18 <@_NSAKEY> GNOME was made the default GUI again after another release, but that's also the same release that saw systemd creep in. 15:21 <@jb7od> I remember- it's why I'd been away as long as all this. I remember gnome2 being the best one for forever (i guess in the beginning all I did was slackware, too, that contributed to gnome2 [and fork] usage). I figured I'd just wait it out, most everything I have serverwise is repeat-upgraded headless or hosted type stuff, so I ended up with some desktop tinker-time and totally blew away a whole installation in recoil from checking out gdm3 lol 15:21 <@_NSAKEY> If you're dead set on using gtk, xfce is about the only one that hasn't suffered brain damage at this point. 15:22 <@_NSAKEY> Ubuntu also went in their own direction with Unity, which I think they scrapped. 15:22 <@_NSAKEY> The Not Invented Here syndrome was strong in Canonical back then. 15:24 <@jb7od> I'm not dead set on it. The debate is still raging. I have a while to make my mind up. 15:25 <@jb7od> Yea, I'm driving an ubuntu atm. It was a fully functional studio build that got massively subjugated by worklife. 15:25 <@aestetix> `g|-: thus the saying, the second amendment protects the first 15:29 <@jb7od> it's held up, gotta say. it's complied with any tarballs I had to feed it, no complaints. 15:38 <@jb7od> this things an xfce but it's got a lot of pieces of the others looks like. 16:00 <@opticron> ehhh, I just let gnome3 be there. I don't have any high resolution/large screens, so every screen contains only a single window and I just alt+tab between them 16:33 <@jb7od> I could see how on certain devices, it might go down a little easier. I don't know what it was or why gnome2 remains so hard to beat, and I understand there's a long tragic bloody history there (I stepped away after the battle of pam integration- figured nature would take it's course, then apple bootganged X desktop. Long ago I f'd with opengem on this dual boot dos and monkeylinux toshiba satellite, and the neandertal desktops and had grown a 16:33 <@jb7od> little more than a passing interest, but the last 15 years don't look to have been kind at all to the open source desktop environment developers of earth). 16:34 <@jb7od> it was neat stuff but looked pretty heartbreaking. 16:39 <@opticron> what version of gnome3 did you use? 16:39 <@opticron> because some of the earlier versions were absolutely abysmal 16:40 <@opticron> whatever is currenty shipping with centos7 is trash 16:41 <@jb7od> whatever comes out of the box with a debian buster netinst-iso these days. I didn't get that far with it. It behaved okay, I just was jarred at the departure to the sidebar icon/center pane sliding menu thing. 16:42 <@opticron> yeah, given my method of usage, I don't really hit that at all 18:05 -!- rpifan_ [~rpifan@p200300D26700BD1208A449D4944E26FC.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #se2600 18:08 -!- rpifan [~rpifan@p200300D26700BD76376CE2E28B0448E3.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] 19:06 -!- rpifan_ is now known as rpifan 22:13 -!- rpifan [~rpifan@p200300D26700BD1208A449D4944E26FC.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] --- Log closed Sun May 03 00:00:07 2020
