I used to own it. 08:31 <@Mirage> xray: that was his site for coordinating the geek shoot that year for phreaknic 08:31 < xray> Very nice. 08:31 < xray> I wish I could have been there. 08:31 <@dc0de> https://web.archive.org/web/20090308084326/http://pbdownrange.com/ 08:31 < PigBot> Slinging Lead Downrange, pbdownrange.com (at web.archive.org) http://tinyurl.com/vywzts3 08:32 <@Mirage> I had a bit of fun with the network by creating internal zones for a few ppl's personal sites and having them point to an internally hosted fake GoDaddy park page. 08:33 <@Mirage> pbdownrange was one of them. Skydog.net, wilpig.org, memestreams, etc 08:33 < xray> How did I miss this? I miss all the fun. Sigh. 08:33 <@Dolemite> Looking for ways to sabotage mechanical keyboard. Dude in cube next to me is driving us all crazy with his maniacal clackity clacks. 08:33 < xray> At least I have coffee. 08:33 <@Mirage> I made sure to let Decius know about it before enabling it on memesteams because Rattle is the one that I was targeting. 08:34 <@dc0de> Dolemite: coffee with cream and SALT... lots of SALT... saturate the solution with NaCL, and then accidentially spill on his keyboard. 08:34 <@dc0de> The salt will dry inside the keys, and cause them to stop working. 08:35 <@dc0de> then you can purchase him a nice quiet keyboard... 08:35 <@Dolemite> Oh he was already provided a quiet one by the company. He brought this in from home. 08:35 < xray> Dolemite: I would be that guy. I use an IBM model M keyboard. I have my own office at work but I telecommute full time anyway. 08:35 <@Dolemite> Maybe I just need to bring in my speakers and start playing Lord of Acid all day long. 08:36 <@dc0de> Oh... in that case, I would play show tunes from 70's & 80's broadway shows... 08:36 < xray> I lived on submarines so I got really good at tuning out surrounding noise. 08:36 <@dc0de> they'll get stuck in his head... and fuck him up forever. 08:37 <@Dolemite> I've basically had to turn up the volume on my headphones to the level where anybody trying to get my attention will now have to tap me on the shoulder 08:37 < xray> Or you could do what everyone at one of the open offices on campus and use noise canceling headphones. 08:37 <@Dolemite> noise cancelling headphones don't work THAT well 08:37 <@Dagmar> THen you can throat punch them for startling you 08:37 <@Dagmar> Logitech makes some fine quiet keyboards 08:38 <@Dagmar> Cherry MX "Silent" is bullshit 08:38 < xray> They will cut out most of the keyboard sound and you won't have to turn up your headphones as loud. 08:38 <@Dagmar> THey're not as loud as .22 fire, but they're not silent 08:38 < xray> An even better idea is to use ear plugs and a bone conduction headset. 08:40 < xray> It is the best noise canceling I have ever used. The only thing that gets in is if it loud enough to be conducted to your inner ear by bone conduction. 08:40 <@opticron> Dolemite, you can get some orings and put them under the keys to reduce clacking from bottoming out 08:41 <@Dolemite> I may just squirt some caulk under the keys one morning, since he doesn't come in until around 9 or so. That'll definitely put a stop to it. :) 08:42 <@opticron> you could pop in on the weekend and replace all his clicky keyswitches with tactile ones :D 08:42 <@opticron> that's an unreasonable amount of effort, though 08:43 <@Evilpig> bread ties 08:43 <@Evilpig> pop a couple of keys and lay in bread ties across several switches 08:44 <@Evilpig> they'll half click and just be generally annoying as hell and when he finds them he'll know he's being an ass 08:44 <@Corydon76> Why not just replace his keyboard, and reassign his mechanical keyboard to a cart in the data center, where nobody can hear the keys over the fan noise, anyway? 08:45 -!- dc0de changed the topic of #se2600 to: This space for rent, brought to you by RentDaemon! || dc0de has whoremail.com available for domain transfer. 08:45 <@opticron> I like clicky keyswitches, too, but if I was in a cube farm then I wouldn't be enough of an ass to keep using a loud keyboard 08:45 <@dc0de> really? no whores out there? Just think, you could start a site for whores. 08:46 <@dc0de> I mean, Evilpig@whoremail.com? has a great ring? I friggin love my pi-hole... running on ubuntu. 09:54 <@Dagmar> I really thought I'd be seeing some broken links but apparently it's so common to allow advertisers to use Javascript and the DOM to just inject their shit into your page layout anywhere they want, if they can't load, they can't fuck up the page 10:01 <@Mirage> What I run into all the time is sites, esp news, that have something that obstructs most of the page with whining about how the ads are being blocked and so you have to create an account and subscribe to see their shit. Granted my solution is, fuck them...i'll look it up somewhere else or just not worry about it. 10:07 <@Dagmar> FuckAdBlock doesn't work when the browser has nothing to do with it 10:13 <@Dagmar> I'm still tryihng to be nice by not escalating to pi-hole levels 10:13 <@Dagmar> Like, I'm not going to block Google's ad stuff because they're being reasonable 10:13 <@Dagmar> Their ads just sit there and don't try to clamor for attention or waste bandwidth 10:14 <@Dagmar> ...but some of this shit with autoplaying videos lately has become too fuckin much 10:23 <@dc0de> Dagmar: fuck being nice, I went to pi-hole, because my pfsense with 4GB of RAM couldn't handle pfblocker-NG with DNSBL enabled. 10:23 <@dc0de> not enough ram... 10:37 <@Dagmar> I don't mind _reasonable_ ads, plus I want to know specifically what bullshit the disreputables are up to 10:37 <@Dagmar> The only way I can do that is to stare directly at them 10:39 <@Dagmar> Also, back in the 90's I kind of _killed_ a "direct email marketing alliance" by simply showing the fuck up and testifying first-hand that what the man was saying was bullshit 10:39 <@Dagmar> I'd gotten _multiple_ invitations to the event, unsolicited 10:40 <@Dagmar> They did not like the angry young man showing up, both disputing the claims being made, and having the technical acumen to back up what he was saying 10:40 <@Dagmar> Pretty much everyone there knew it was bullshit, and the initiative _died_ 10:40 <@Dagmar> If I see something like that showing up for advertisers here in Nashville, I intend to treat it with the same "Kevorkian" methods 10:40 <@Dagmar> er...w eb advertisers 10:43 <@Dagmar> I am _done_ with letting shiftless, dishonest people try and act like big shit on the internet, at least in my city 10:45 < xray> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/02/flaw-in-billions-of-wi-fi-devices-left-communications-open-to-eavesdroppng/ 10:45 < PigBot> Flaw in billions of Wi-Fi devices left communications open to eavesdroppng | Ars Technica (at arstechnica.com) http://tinyurl.com/vnlrcws 10:45 < xray> https://www.eset.com/int/kr00k/ 10:45 < PigBot> kr00k | ESET (at www.eset.com) http://tinyurl.com/sgtg3a8 12:22 <@dc0de> so, I moved my lists to the pi-hole, and it took me about 45 mins to do everything. 12:22 <@Dagmar> Goodness 12:23 <@Dagmar> Also, I'd hjave to check the nginx docs to be sure, but I don't think that's how it does capture buffers either 12:23 <@Dagmar> @#$@#$ 12:28 < xray> Are you running Pi-Hole on a Raspberry Pi? There are multiple solutions to this. I chose to use a Raspberry Pi 3 and set it to boot from a USB attached hard drive (no SD card needed). I used an old IDE hard drive in an external USB drive case that I had laying around collecting dust. 13:41 <@Corydon76> If you're going to do logging like that, another approach is to use remote syslogd for the logging 13:41 -!- rpifan_ [~rpifan@p200300D2672BA341FE0E74BDC9E602E1.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #se2600 13:44 -!- rpifan [~rpifan@p200300D2672BA314CBDE205870DD3D7A.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds] 13:48 -!- rpifan_ is now known as rpifan 14:14 <@Dagmar> It could be worse 14:15 <@Dagmar> You can burn upo microSD cards _real fast_ if you have an underpowered power supply 14:15 <@Dagmar> I was blowing through them in about a month flat because of that until I realized which damn wall wart I'd been using 14:16 <@Dagmar> Remote syslogging (or just NOT logging if no one reads it because wtf) is a very good optiojn 14:48 <@Corydon76> Logging is one of those things that you never need until you turn it off. 15:43 <@oddball> Dagmar: Brandon said that he would have liked to be a fly on the wall hearing you talk this woman through using the signage pis. I told him you probably would have driven down there and set something on fire. 15:43 <@Dagmar> I'd have told her to put tape over the rj-45 port after the second incident 15:44 <@oddball> she would have removed the tape. 15:44 <@Dagmar> So we start sending them out with electrical tape that's nice and black over the RJ-45 port 15:47 <@oddball> After actually talking to her, the idea of her being responsible for tying her own shoe laces scares me. 15:47 <@Dagmar> Dayum 15:48 <@oddball> I actually had to explain, using small words, what each of the folders were for. 15:49 <@oddball> for those playing at home, the folders are labeled "everyday" "Monday" "tuesday" etc 15:50 <@Dagmar> Well, that's not strictly true 15:51 <@Dagmar> They're actually "0_Everyday", "1_Sunday", "2_Monday" and so on 15:51 <@Dagmar> The numbers may confuse small children and housepets 15:51 <@Dagmar> FreeFull: _minimum_ 15:52 <@eryc> logs are mostly useless even when you have them 16:00 <@Corydon76> I'll agree that logs are mostly useless when you aren't a developer of the affected software. If you don't understand what the code is supposed to be doing, then the logs aren't likely to help. 16:02 <@Corydon76> Same thing is kind of true for monitoring alerts. It's a lot of noise if you don't understand the purpose of each alert. 16:03 <@eryc> eh 16:03 <@eryc> i understand all the logs 16:03 <@eryc> still think they're mostly useless 16:04 <@eryc> most of the problems i can't identify aren't logged either 16:04 <@Corydon76> From time to time, I go in and work to suppress various logging alerts. Mostly it tends to be something that isn't critical, but is technically wrong. 16:05 <@Corydon76> It is generally good practice to be pedantic enough so that the code doesn't throw its pedantry back at you. 16:05 <@eryc> true that 17:12 <@Evilpig> Dagmar: change management had no involvement with our little dns change. it was done and that was it. ;) 18:35 -!- rpifan [~rpifan@p200300D2672BA341FE0E74BDC9E602E1.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 19:57 <@Dagmar> Good. 19:57 <@Dagmar> THat should have been a breakfix 19:57 <@Dagmar> "We're doing this.
