Deletion implies finality. Expiration implies that it'll happen when they get around to it. 07:38 <@Corydon76> When you're dealing with a very large cloud, deletion isn't instantaneous. It's scheduled, and it'll happen when it happens. 07:40 <@Corydon76> When you do an 'rm' in Unix, it happens more or less immediately. When you tell AWS to remove something, they schedule a job that deletes the object. You aren't really doing anything other than creating a job when you request an expiration. 07:42 <@Corydon76> Though, to be honest, Unix does function more like that, too. A deletion is just a removal of a reference, and the actual data isn't overwritten until another process makes a disk request that would be fulfilled by using the blocks that were just deallocated. 07:42 -!- Dagmar [dagmar@unaffiliated/dagmar] has joined #se2600 07:42 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o Dagmar] by ChanServ 08:00 -!- dc0de [~jim@198.46.153.211] has joined #se2600 08:00 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o dc0de] by ChanServ 08:01 <@eryc> well, every single thing you do in the cloud is a queued job 08:02 <@eryc> io requests are queued as well, and rm waits for confirmation 08:03 <@eryc> and in the large columnar databases the object gets marked with a tombstone and yet another job rebuilds the data at a later time 08:19 -!- Corydon76 [~quassel@96.69.98.139] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 08:36 -!- Corydon76 [~quassel@96.69.98.139] has joined #se2600 08:36 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o Corydon76] by ChanServ 11:02 <@Dolemite> LOL, on a Federal conference call and at least one person is watching / listening to the impeachment hearings in the background 11:06 <@Corydon76> I'm hoping for a nice long process, and I hope the process is known as "being Hillaried". 11:08 <@opticron> you can always get that started on twitter now "The impeachment hearings just started and Trump is totally getting #Hillaried" 11:20 <@Dolemite> Man, every time I get on a conference call, it seems that every cube next to me gets a visitor that doesn't understand inside voice/outside voice. 12:56 -!- dc0de [~jim@198.46.153.211] has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds] 12:57 -!- dc0de [~jim@198.46.153.211] has joined #se2600 12:57 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o dc0de] by ChanServ 14:01 -!- dc0de [~jim@198.46.153.211] has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds] 14:02 -!- rpifan [~rpifan@p200300D26729819449FC0D84842048BD.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds] 14:22 -!- rpifan [~rpifan@p200300D2672981DA90376907CC017294.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #se2600 14:46 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o Catonic] by ChanServ 14:47 <@Catonic> I hate that I missed PN. 14:54 -!- dc0de [~jim@198.46.153.211] has joined #se2600 14:54 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o dc0de] by ChanServ 17:46 -!- dc0de [~jim@198.46.153.211] has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds] 18:11 -!- rpifan [~rpifan@p200300D2672981DA90376907CC017294.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 19:42 <@brimstone> next year! 19:43 <@brimstone> submit to the CFP Catonic 20:22 <@Dagmar> I'm definitely going to actually submit a CFP about DoT/DoH for next year 20:22 <@Dagmar> After spending this much time looking at them, I might as well go the full deal and get to the point where I was with DHCP when I finally decided it was "okay" 20:22 <@Dagmar> i.e., I can run the shit in my head 20:23 <@Dagmar> If I can't make a talk about it at least amusing then I'll probably be dead 20:23 <@Dagmar> I might just set up some shit in cron just in case a plane falls on me or something 21:02 -!- dc0de [~jim@198.46.153.211] has joined #se2600 21:02 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o dc0de] by ChanServ 21:10 -!- DrArkaneX [~drarkanex@unaffiliated/drarkanex] has joined #se2600 --- Log closed Thu Nov 14 00:00:52 2019
