07:28 < xray> It is a box made by Knox that goes on the outside of a building with a key for the building in it. The idea is that only the fire department has a Knox key.

07:29 < xray> That way they can get into any building but only have to carry one key. It is a type of physical key escrow. If you can duplicate the Knox key you can get into anything.
07:31 < xray> They control distribution of the key blanks and the duplicating equipment. The old style was biaxial but now they use M3. They are very difficult to pick.
07:33 < xray> The common perception is that they are pick proof. I met a locksmith last week that was convinced no one had ever picked a Medeco biaxial lock. I mentioned that Bosnian Bill has done it and the video is on Youtube. He still insisted it is not possible.

07:45 < xray> Yes. The key is like any other key except some or all of the biting is cut off 90 degrees. This cause the associated pin to rotate and line up a notch that the sidebar slides into.
