Just make sure you check on their plans after a couple of years of service. I was paying for 50 down/20 up for long enough that they rolled out 100 up/40 down for the same price, and all I had to do was request a speed upgrade without giving them any extra money. They just pushed firmware to the gear that they gave me, and 10:32 < _NSAKEY> that was the end of it. 10:32 < _NSAKEY> Oh, and it's a dedicated line. 10:34 < oddball> Yeah, I remember you telling me that. 10:34 < oddball> And we're not getting their phone service. 10:35 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o oddball] by ChanServ 10:35 < _NSAKEY> Are you getting their TV service? 10:35 <@oddball> yep 10:35 < _NSAKEY> When I was using them, they required TV service to allow access to the faster speeds. 10:36 <@oddball> I think they know allow just internet, but we actually do watch live TV on occasion. 10:36 < _NSAKEY> I don't remember what I paid, but I pay less with Comcast for what amounts to better service, but I think that has more to do with my local node not being used much because AT&T was the only internet option out here first, and Comcast had only been out here for a couple of months before I moved. 10:36 <@oddball> And, well, it's roughly half what we were paying Comcast, so.... 10:36 < _NSAKEY> TDS allowed just internet, but when I was last in La Vergne the fastest plan I could get was 100 down/40 up. 10:37 < _NSAKEY> Oh, and they don't give a flying fuck if you run any kind of servers. You just have to let them know to give you a static IP, but in practice the IPs don't change all that often. 10:37 < _NSAKEY> That was as of 2015, anyway. 10:37 <@oddball> We're getting the 100down/40up. Which is... significantly faster than the Comcast service we're leaving. 10:38 <@oddball> That's pretty standard. 10:38 < _NSAKEY> I think I pay for 300 down/40 up with Comcast, but started out with 250 down/30 up. 10:38 < _NSAKEY> At least, that's what it was on paper. 10:38 <@Dolemite> TDS here requires triple play if you want Gigabit fiber 10:38 < _NSAKEY> In reality, I've always gotten 300 down/40 up here. 10:38 <@oddball> Of course, the only server I run is an ssh server, and I have a dynamic IP service. 10:39 < _NSAKEY> Again, though, I think my local node is very undersubscribed. 10:39 < _NSAKEY> oddball: I'm the same way, except I also added an onion address so that in case my IP changes on me, I can still hop on and figure out the new IP. 10:40 <@Dolemite> That's my case with Charter cable. Most of my neighborhood uses TDS, so I'm on a very sparsely populated node. I pay for 60 Mbps service and regularly get download speeds of 90 Mbps. 10:40 < _NSAKEY> Dolemite: The AT&T service here was something like 6 Mb/s up and down, dedicated. 10:40 <@Dolemite> Heh. Great speeds for 2001. 10:40 < _NSAKEY> The sales drone tried convincing me that this dedicated line would be superior to Comcast's shared 300 up/40 down, at the SAME PRICE. 10:41 < _NSAKEY> And I was just like, "LOL, NO." 10:41 < _NSAKEY> I then politely informed the sales drone that I recently stopped paying for dedicated 100 down/40 up from TDS, so anything less was just going to piss me off. 10:41 < _NSAKEY> And that I'd rather have a decent shot at better speeds vs knowing I'll be stuck with garbage speeds. 10:41 <@Dolemite> Yeah, AT&T talked my parents into signing up for U-Verse DSL over Charter. I found out 2 days before the install and made my parents cancel, then I called and berated them for taking advantage of octagenarians who don't understand computers. 10:42 < _NSAKEY> They're so awful that even the apartment complex management was telling me that AT&T's service was objectively terrible. 10:42 <@Dolemite> Apparently it all boiled down to my parents wanting the cable bill lower, so I called Charter and get them on a cheaper plan for TV because they were paying for channels they never watched. 10:43 < _NSAKEY> I stopped trying to help old people like that a long time ago. 10:43 <@Dolemite> I didn't realize it until that call, but it seems you can get local broadcast + 12 other channels for a significant amount cheaper than the plan they push as the basic plan. 10:43 < _NSAKEY> They ask for advice, then seemingly use that as a blueprint for what they don't want to do, then get amazed when shit blows up in my face. 10:44 <@Dolemite> My parents know when to just get out of the way and let me handle it. 10:44 < _NSAKEY> I'm over trying to help uninterested old people not get scammed. 10:44 < _NSAKEY> Mine were too stupid to learn that lesson. 10:44 <@Dolemite> The only issue I run into is that they forget that non-retired people have to actually go to work during the day. 10:44 <@Dolemite> So when they ask if I can come over and the only chance I have is on the weekend, they get frustrated that I'm "so busy" 10:45 < _NSAKEY> Hahaha. 10:46 < _NSAKEY> One thing that was helpful with test driving the AT&T service here was that at least at the time, the communal wifi connection was provided by AT&T. It was terrible, to say the least. 10:46 < _NSAKEY> I think that at least going into the next year or so, Comcast still won't be used to heavily, because people will still be enslaved to their contracts. 10:47 < _NSAKEY> My service has gotten slightly worse during peak times since moving here, but working nights means I mostly don't have to care about that. 10:49 < dc0de[m]> Cox and Comcast out west are trying to force that shared Wi-Fi crap, when we ordered our cable, we specifically requested a modem with no wireless & when I went to pick it up, that tried hard to give me as Wi-Fi one, telling me that it's basically the same. 10:49 < _NSAKEY> As long as I don't actually have to interact with a human at Comcast, they're not so bad here. 10:49 <@oddball> Well, like I said, Naienko and I rarely max out the business account we have with Comcast at 16down/3up, so the 100down/40up will doo juuuust fine. 10:49 < dc0de[m]> I refused to take it, and made them go fine me one with no Wi-Fi 10:49 < _NSAKEY> But, as soon as I have to call their outsourced tech support, I hate them with the passion of a thousand suns. 10:50 < dc0de[m]> Calling any tech support is like burning our your brain with a warm duck bill 10:50 < dc0de[m]> Out 10:50 < _NSAKEY> dc0de[m]: You can flip Comcast's modems into bridge mode and fix that. 10:50 < _NSAKEY> Oh, but Comcast's is especially stupid. 10:50 * dc0de[m] has big hands on little keyboard 10:51 < _NSAKEY> They weren't this awful the last time I used them, which is back when they still had American call centers. 10:51 < _NSAKEY> I tried adding a security code to my account that has to be given to a rep any time someone calls about my account. 10:51 < dc0de[m]> Nsakey, sure, but they can still reach in and turn it back on. 10:51 < _NSAKEY> They refuse to ask for it, because it's not in the script. 10:51 < dc0de[m]> If it's not there, they can't 10:52 < _NSAKEY> Like, the drone actually told me that I had to call attention to the account security code before I would be prompted for it, but that he would happily do anything up to and not limited to cancelling or adding service without it. 10:52 <@oddball> _NSAKEY: That was the issue here. I've had to interact with humans *several* times. Oh, and since it's a business account, it's been folks in house in the US. 10:52 < _NSAKEY> But, anyone trying to call to fuck with me would be able to call, not provide the code, and do whatever they could get away with. 10:52 <@oddball> Up to and including a billing fuck up that took 4 months to sort out. 10:53 < _NSAKEY> oddball: Do they still send someone do your door within 4 hours unless it's close to the end of a business day? 10:53 < _NSAKEY> I interacted with their business division circa 2009-2011, and it was that way. 10:54 < _NSAKEY> They're like, the only bill I won't autopay because I just don't trust them, but they've yet to mess up my bill. 10:59 -!- oddball_ [~oddball@h96-61-175-66.lvrgtn.dsl.dynamic.tds.net] has joined #se2600 11:02 -!- oddball [~oddball@c-98-240-105-54.hsd1.tn.comcast.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds] 11:16 < oddball_> annnnd the switch has been made. 11:17 -!- oddball_ is now known as oddball 11:18 -!- mode/#se2600 [+o oddball] by ChanServ 11:20 -!- remoford [~remo_lapt@68.52.35.32] has joined #se2600 11:28 <@oddball> _NSAKEY: do they send someone to my door in 4 hours or less? Their business class service used to not be terrible. 11:32 < _NSAKEY> I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the idea that you were getting "business" service. 11:32 < _NSAKEY> I don't know, maybe the Comcast workers in Davidson county are universally awful at their jobs. 11:37 -!- strages [uid11297@gateway/web/irccloud.com/x-sejkkmisnkbddjfr] has joined #se2600 13:15 <@Corydon76> I did enjoy how Comcast hired an independent contractor to "bury" a line from the pole. They dug up my yard and then ran the wire to the electric meter, which is NOT where the cable is terminated. 13:16 <@Corydon76> Oh, and 10 months later, I'm still running on the "temporary" line. 14:26 <@rattle> Jarred Kushner has it so good. In order to maintain top dog status, he's just gotta be smarter than Trump. How fucking hard is that? 14:27 <@Dolemite> Trump was smart enough to make his son and son-in-law go to the meeting with the Russians. 14:46 <@oddball> I'm still a bit confused why TDS requires us to have their wireless modem for the TV. The box that the fiber plugs into sure as hell looks like it's a router. I guess it could just be a switch. 14:47 <@oddball> So... I now have 3 boxes owned by TDS in the house, which just seems excessive. 15:41 <@Dagmar> f**king gdax 15:43 <@dasunt> oddball: Well, only one is TDS, the other two are NSA. :p 15:58 < aestetix> It would be nice if the US could produce a single politician who was worth a shit. 15:58 < aestetix> But none of them are. 16:42 <@oddball> dasunt: fair enough 17:12 <@dasunt> aestetix: There's a few politicians I don't mind.
